ABOUT THIS ARTWORK
One day she’s your best friend; the next she’s left you to the wolves. Fickle, maybe, but an intriguing subject to build a painting around. I’ve taken the more positive approach; the lucky full moon; the winning hand of cards; the winning roll of the dice, which also gives you the lucky three eights; and the enigmatic golden dragon clasping a pearl. I wanted the painting to feel intimate, warm, a touch mystical, and a little bit sexy, just like good luck. Real fun painting fish net stockings and dragon scales, but I was quite happy with the outcome.

A few extra notes I came across the dragon while building the elements for the painting: Sometimes you’ll find the dragon holding a pearl, also known as the wish-fulfilling jewel. In Buddhist iconography, the wish-fulfilling jewel represents the radiance of the sun that brings light to all darkness and can grant true joy. The image can also be seen on the coats of arms of Chinese emperors as early as the Han Dynasty. In this case, the dragon and the pearl represent two things needed to successfully rule—authority and wisdom.

Many pictures of Chinese dragons show a pearl under their chin or in their claws. The pearl is associated with spiritual energy, wisdom, prosperity, power, immortality, thunder, or the moon.

Both Taoism and Buddhism use pearls as symbols of wisdom or enlightenment. Buddhism particularly depicts the pearl in the center of a lotus blossom as the ultimate wisdom in life. Since dragons are believed to be supernaturally wise, perhaps it is only natural that they should seek or hold such a treasure.
