#Me too (Ecce Ancilla Domini)

$820.00

#Me too (Ecce Ancilla Domini) is an original artwork.

ABOUT THIS ARTWORK
This figurative painting was formulated from thinking about the coverage of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the #MeToo movement that responded.

The title (the Latin bit) was cribbed from Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s painting of the same title and translates to ‘behold the handmaid of the Lord’, which sounds like something from a Margaret Atwood novel! Well, honestly, you wouldn’t feel that comfortable about saying “No” to the wrathful, vengeful, “Abraham, go sacrifice your son”; “do what I say or I’ll turn you into a pillar of salt”, etc., etc., God of the time. Rossetti may have been thinking in similar terms as one review of his work postulates “This painting is unusual in that the artist shows Mary in a state of fear”.

I’m not intending to belittle the ‘Me Too’ movement in any way. More of an agnostic’s thoughts about relative acceptance given the so-called annunciation is part of a belief system followed by a significant percentage of the world’s population. That is supported and promoted by a lot of powerful and influential people.
