Welcome to Clarkesville

Welcome to Clarkesville is an original artwork.
ABOUT THIS ARTWORK
The painting is a homage to John Clarke (1948-2017) who became initially known as the creator of the laconic NZ farmer ‘Fred Dagg’, then later for his satirical sketches with Bryan Dawe and the very popular satire on the Sydney Olympics.
As Fred Dagg, he created a fictitious NZ farming community full of unlikely characters which I’ve similarly done here with Clarkesville. In his work with Bryan Dawe the brunt of the satire was directed against politicians, government bureaucrats, and people who found themselves in the mainstream news. In Clarkesville, a lot of the businesses are run by political names, familiar at the time of the painting or associated with cultural quirks.
Given the nature of the satire presented by Clarke and Dawe and what should have been taken from it I find it a little disheartening that our recent batch of pollies seems to be just as vulnerable to creating material that spawns satire at their expense.
John Clarke, you were a treasure.
